“Not only can we do better for new parents, we must.”
I am Tara Hughes, a postpartum doula, lactation educator, artist, and mother of two living in Saratoga Springs, NY.
My passion for birthwork is rooted in the belief that while having a baby is many things, most of all, it is a gift. Newborns teach us many things about ourselves as parents and people but also about what it means to be alive, love, devotion, our world, and our values.
My journey to this work began after the birth of my first child in 2016. I often refer to this experience as the best and hardest time. After that, I learned I was not alone. I was astounded by the disparity of education, preparation, and namely support provided around postpartum versus pregnancy. I continued to learn, that in conventional medical births, there is a gaping hole in the cultural support and medical care a mother receives after the arrival of their newborn.
I am passionate about maternal health care. Having a postpartum doula is one very effective way for new parents to feel supported, gain confidence, and receive their due care. This passion led me to step in to support my close friends and family. I then decided to complete postpartum certification training and lactation educator training with the Cappa Institute in 2023.
I offer professional, committed, and personalized care. Working with each family individually, we come up with a plan that best supports their unique needs and desires. Supporting them in creating the best postpartum experience possible. The arrival of a baby is a milestone event and there are no redos.
My intention as a postpartum doula is to provide you with the support you need to gain confidence on your journey into parenthood, and to allow you the mental and emotional space to take in all the lessons this period in your life has to offer, while prioritizing your rest and recovery.
